Tennis: 18-time Grand Slam winner Martina Navratilova thinks that the most successful player of this century so far Serena Williams can win 20 plus Grand Slams if she stays healthy because she is still super fit and at the top of his form.
By winning French Open at the start of this month, Serena took her total Grand Slam tally to 16. She has won three of the last four Majors and is hot favorite to add two more this year by defending her Wimbledon and US Open titles.
However, Navratilova also said that no one can guarantee if Serena will be add even one more Grand Slam if she gets a serious injury.
The American legend said in an interview with The Tennis Space, “Serena could end up with 16. She could stub her toe, or break her leg, tomorrow. Or she could win 20-something grand slams if she stays healthy. She could win two more this year, which would put her on 18, tied with Chris Evert and myself. And then next year she could get closer to Steffi Graf, who’s on 22.”
She added, “She’s 31, but she’s a young 31, because she hasn’t played that many matches because of injuries and other things. She’s fresh and very determined, and she beats most opponents before they walk out of the locker room.”
Serena is at the fourth place in the list of women with most Grand Slams in the open era. Steffi Graf is at number position with 22 Grand Slams, whereas, Chris Evert and Navratilova are at joint second place with 18 each.
If we talk about the all-time record, then Serena is at the sixth position as Margret Court has 24 Major titles to her name and Helen Will Moody, who played in 1920s and 30s, won a total of 19 Grand Slams.
Serena has missed many Grand Slams throughout her career due to different injuries and problems. She won her 13th Grand Slam at the 2010 Wimbledon but seriously injured herself during a post tournament celebration party. Her family says that she got infection after that and it got so bad that she was close to dying.
The American had to wait for two years to add another Grand Slam to her total after that. So, it all depends on Serena’s health now as fully fit Serena is almost unbeatable at the Grand Slams.
