Tennis: Serena has 17 Grand Slams now, one short of Evert and Navratilova at second, 5 short of Steffi´s all time record

Tennis: World no.1 Serena Williams defeated World no.2 Victoria Azarenka for the second consecutive year in the US Open final to defend her US Open title successfully for the first time. She has now equalled Steffi Graf's achievement of winning 5 US Open titles and is one short of Chris Evert's 6.

Chris Evert holds the record for winning most US Open titles in the open era and Serena would be looking to equal her record now. She is also one short of Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova's 18 Grand Slam titles.

Evert and Navratilova are sitting tied in the second place in the list of most Grand Slam titles. Steffi Graf of Germany is on top of the list with 22 Grand Slam titles. Margaret Court has won 24 Grand Slams but only 11 of her titles were in open era.

Serena had won US Open titles in 1999, 2002 and 2008 too but she had never been able to defend her title. She has now become 8th women in the open era to defend her US Open title.

Other 7 women who have successfully defended their US Open titles are Margaret Court, Billie Jean King, Chris Evert, Martina Navratilova, Steffi Graf, Venus Williams (Serena's sister) and Kim Clijsters.

Serena's next target would surely be to win her 18th Grand Slam and join Evert and Navratilova in the second place on the all time leaders list. She would be left behind only Steffi Graf after that.

Before the US Open final, when Serena was asked about all time record, she had said that she is not thinking about that right now because its still too far.

"I can't think about it," Williams said. "It's so close but still so far. I have to play a great player and play great tennis."

Williams also become oldest US Open champion as she has won the title 18 days before her 32nd birthday, making her 293 days older than Australian Margaret Court was when she won the 1973 title to set the previous age mark.
