Johanna Konta Promises To Leave Out Sentiments Going Against Venus Williams

Tennis - The British No 1 has not had a great start to 2016.

As per the draw of the Australian Open, Briton’s No 1, Johanna Konta will have to pull out all the stops as she goes up against one of child hood heroes, Venus Williams in the first round.

Konta faced off against the American in Wuhan and was leading 5-3 in the deciding set before succumbing to the brilliance of the former World No 1. However, given a second chance, Konta has insisted that there will be no room for sentiments.

“The experience will be different,' Konta said. 'It was the first time I played her and she was one of the players I grew up watching when I was younger so it was definitely a different experience to where I'm at now. She's an inspiration to a lot of kids still growing up. I got to watch her when I was coming up and the next generation is still watching her. It's something that needs to be respected but obviously when you step out on court, you are playing the tennis player on that day and not playing the titles she's won".

The 24 year old enjoyed a great 2015 – having started the year in 146th in the world and finishing off at the 47th ranking. However, luck has not gone her way this year as she has gone out of Hobart and Shenzhen – both first round defeats.

She may have not been able to register any wins going into the first Grand Slam of the year but the Brit who trained in Australia at a young age is ready to go. “It would be nice to have had a couple of wins but I'm happy with the amount of court time I had".
