Murray needs to win or reach finals to overtake Federer

Roger Federer's earlier than expected losses in Rotterdam and Dubai has put his no. 2 ranking in danger as Andy Murray could overtake the Swiss in the world rankings based on how they both perform at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells.

Murray, who will be playing for the first time since the Australian Open, will become no. 2 in the rankings if he wins Indian Wells. If Murray reaches the finals, then Federer needs to reach atleast the semi finals or better in order to hold on to the no. 2 ranking.

If Murray loses in the semi-finals or earlier, then Federer is gauranteed to hold on to the no. 2 spot.

Federer is the defending champion at Indian Wells and has been handed a tough draw with a third round showdown with Frenchman Juilen Benneateau, who recently beat him in Rotterdam and is likely to meet Rafael Nadal in the quarter finals.

Murray has been ranked as high as no. 2 previously.

The BNP Paribas Open men's main draw begins on Thursday.
