Tennis - Maria Sharapova could become world no. 1 if she wins Madrid title next week

Tennis - Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova will battle it out for the world no. 1 ranking at the Mutua Madrid Open which takes place next week.

Last year, Serena defeated Sharapova in the quarter finals and went on to win the title in Madrid to kick start an amazing 12 months in which she won Wimbledon, US Open and the Olympic gold medal and became the oldest player in history to become WTA world no. 1. But she will need to stave off a stiff challenge from Sharapova, who won the Stuttgart title last week for the second year in a row.

Serena's win last year means she is defending 1000 ranking points in Madrid while Sharapova is defending only 250 ranking points.

Sharapova will regain the world no. 1 spot if she wins the title in Madris, no matter how Serena does.

The two will face competition from the rest of the top players including Victoria Azarenka, Agnieszka Radwanska, Na Li, and Angelique Kerber for the title.

Here is what Sharapova needs to do depending on Serena's result in order to become world no. 1
