Anderson and Del Potro met for the first time this year, with Del Potro leading their head-to-head record 3-0. Anderson held his opening game and took advantage of Del Potro's shaky start on serve. In a game where Del Potro served a double fault, Anderson converted 1 of 3 break points and soon consolidated to lead 3-0. He rode the wave of momentum and led 5-2 in a little over half an hour. Anderson served 4 aces while serving for the set and won the set 6-3. Anderson proved tough on serve even early in the second set when he saved a break point in his opening game of the set. After 55' the board read 1-1. Del Potro had no answers for Anderson's first and second serve as the match progressed. At this stage in the match (4-4), Anderson had 21 winners to 20 unforced errors while Del Potro had 10 winners and 9 unforced errors. Anderson held for 5-5 in a game which included ace number 15 of the match. Del Potro levelled the match by winning the 2nd set tie break 7-6. Del Potro turned the match around completely when he got the break of serve in the opening game of the third set. He served for the match at 5-2 and converted the 2nd of 3 match points to win 3-6 7-6 6-2.
