ATP Tokyo - Andy Murray wins in first appearance since becoming Grand Slam champion

Scot beats Ivo Karlovic in first round in straight sets

Playing for the first time since winning his first Grand Slam title, world no. 3 Andy Murray was a straight sets winner over lucky loser Ivo Karlovic in the first round of the Japan Open Tennis Championships in Tokyo on Tuesday.

Murray was due to play former top 10er Gael Monfils but the Frenchma withdrew due to injury and was replaced by Karlovic who lost in the final round of qualifying.

Murray has already qualified for the ATP World Tour Finals in London.

The Scot won 7-6(7), 6-4 to improve to 5-0 lifetime over the tall Croatian.

In other matches, Marcos Baghdatis beat qualifier Sergiy Stakhovsky 7-6(3), 7-5 and Colombian Alejandro Falla beat Thomaz Bellucci 7-5, 6-2.
