American John Isner's quest to qualify for the ATP World Tour Finals in London suffered a major blow on Wednesday as the fifth seed was knocked out of the ATP Valencia Open.
Isner was beaten by talented Belgian David Goffin, who won 7-6(2), 4-6, 6-4 to reach the quarter finals.
Isner hit 21 aces in the match but it was not enough against the Belgian.
Anothe routside contendor for one of the last 2 spots in London, Canadian Milos Raonic was also knocked out oon Wednesday. Raonic was beaten by Gilles Muller of Luxembourg 7-5, 7-6(1) in one hour and 40 minutes.
In a first round battle, Spain's Marcel Granollers scored a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Czech qualifier Jan Hajek. Granollers has won the title last year and was also a finalist here two years ago.
Seventh seed Marin Cilic beat former champion Fernando Verdasco 6-1, 6-4 and now meet fellow Croatian Ivan Dodig. Dodig ended the run of former world n. 1 Lleyton Hewitt 6-1, 3-6, 6-2.
