There have only been two women, Helen Wills (1924 Paris) and the eldest of the Williams sisters Venus Williams (Sydney 2000) who have won the Olympic Gold medals in singles and doubles in the same year.
With Venus Williams and Serena Williams entering the Olympics this year unseeded as they were also at Wimbledon a few weeks ago, it will be interesting to see how they approach each of their matches.
Serena is in fine form with the recent title in Stanford proving that she can still compete at a high level even when not playing her best tennis. Venus on the other hand, although still dealing with health issues off-court (not noticeable on court), won the doubles title with Serena at Wimbledon this year.
The sisters have enjoyed their tennis this year on their beloved grass. Roger Federer, another experienced player making the London 2012 games, has been quoted saying that his mind-set includes Rio de Janeiro but it will depend on his ability to stay healthy. He too has enjoyed success at the previous Olympic games and will hope to add another Gold medal to his achievements.
