After applying for political asylum in the US years ago, Lepchenko has finally returned to region she fled so long ago.
She was 16 years old, came to Miami for a youth tournament and realized that she was alone, abandoned by her native Uzbekistan.
"A couple of days before the tournament I did not see my name in the entry list. I asked what was going on and they told me that I was canceled by the federation Uzbek. They did not want me to play. They saw me crying, I was 16 and they told me that I would not be prevented from playing. I just had to get in touch with the right people to represent the United States. And so I did."
In Moscow it did not go too well - she lost to Tsvetana Pironkova 6-0 7-6.
