British hopes for a medal in the women's doubles at the Olympics suffered a blow as the young pairing of Heather Watson and Laura Robson were beaten in the first round on Saturday.

The duo lost to Germans Angelique Kerber and Sabine Lisicki.

The Brits led by a set and 4-2 before the German stomred back for a 16 64 63 win.

In other matches, third seeded Russians Maria Kirilenko and Nadia Petrova scored a 67(5) 63 62 win over Klaudia Jans-Ignacik and Alicja Rosolska.
