Maria Sharapova of Russia has withdrawn from Rogers Cup event at Montreal and would not be playing at the event. World no. 2 and Silver Medallist at the London 2012 Olympics Singles event, Sharapova pulled out because of an illness, just four days after she lost in the finals of the Olympic Games to Serene Williams.

Sharapova was just one match away from becoming only second women in the history of Tennis to complete Career Golden Grand Slam as she played in the Olympics finals but she was thrashed and humiliated by Serena Williams in the finals. According to Sharapova it was stomach problem which became a cause of her withdrawning. Sharapova said,

“I thought I’d be okay in a couple of days, but I wasn’t able to practise today and there was no way I’d be ready to play my first match tomorrow.”

Sharapova was supposed to go for a practice session Wednesday morning which she did not and it indictaed that something was wrong with her. She was very disappointed on pulling out from the event and said,

“It’s just a coincidence. I was ready to play here and I was looking forward to it because this tournament is a good preparation for the U.S. Open.”

Because of Sharapova's withdrawal, Kazakhstan's Galina Voskoboeva has been given a place in the main draw, who had beating Sharapova last year at the same event.
