Andy Murray and Rafael Nadal

Former world number one Rafael Nadal has not played tennis for the last two months but he is following all the events closely. The Spaniard texted British number one Andy Murray right after the latter captured his first Grand Slam title at the US Open.

Nadal congratulated Murray and advised him to enjoy the moment. He also expressed his feelings that he was happy for Murray and added that the British number one deserved this honor. Murray received many congratulatory texts but this one from Nadal was more special as it came from one of his closest rivals on the tour.

Talking to the reporters during his post celebration interviews, Murray shared, “Rafa Nadal texted me and told me to enjoy it. He said he was happy for me and that I deserved it.”

He added, “That meant a lot. I got lots of messages like that but when it comes from one of your rivals it means even more.”

The ‘Big 4’ fight against each other on the court but they hold a lot of respect for each other. Although, Novak Djokovic stated during the US Open that these four guys cannot be friends as they are battling against each other for success in all the tournaments but they still remain on good terms all the time.

Nadal also congratulated Murray through his facebook page. The Spanish player wrote, “Congrats to Andy to achieve his first Grand Slam. He and Nole has been played a great US Open final, both deserved to win.”

The Spaniard showed this positive gesture despite the fact that Murray overtook him to take number three ranking this week. Nadal has not played any competitive match since losing to Lukas Rosol in the second round of the Wimbledon more than two months back.

However, he would know how much happiness Murray would be feeling after winning the US Open as he also went through these phases some years back. Although, Nadal won his maiden Grand Slam title in 2005 but he defeated Djokovic to capture his first US Open crown just two years back.

This victory is more special for Murray due to the fact he had lost four Major finals before this one.
