World number three Rafael Nadal has wished the former world number one player on the WTA World Tour Kim Clijsters on her retirement.
Nadal wrote on his facebook page, “A great friend leaves the circuit today and keep the racket. Kim Clijsters I wish you well!!”
The King of Clay also uploaded a picture from an old tennis event in which he and Clijsters were sitting on a courtside bench together and talking to each other.
Belgium’s tennis queen Clijsters had announced earlier in this year that she would retire from professional tennis as soon as her US Open campaign would end. The Belgian star was looking to win her fourth title at the Flushing Meadows and end her career on a high note but she was stunned by a low ranked British player Laura Robson in the second round.
This is not for the first time that Clijsters is retiring, as she also quit the sport in 2007. However, she came out of retirement in 2009 and in just her third tournament after her return, the Belgian captured her second US Open title. Flushing Meadows is the same place where Clijsters won her maiden Major crown in 2005. The Belgian super star defended her US Open title in 2010 and then clinched the Australian Open title in 2011.
Clijsters has a daughter and she has said that she wants to have a second child that is why she is getting retired from tennis. When she won the 2009 US Open title, she became only the first mother to grab a Grand Slam title since Evonne Goolagong in 1980.
