From the tennis world and especially from Nadal’s rivals during many battles, came messages of encouragement to the Mallorcan.
After Federer defeated Bogomolov he confessed that he was not surprised by the news of his withdrawal:
"It is no surprise, because I wrote to him and he told me he was not feeling well at all. The withdrawal is a bad thing for tennis, there's no doubt about that. If he withdraws from U.S. Open when we still have 12 days, means that it is a serious problem and this worries me. I think it's a very smart decision on his part, but obviously it is a blow to the circuit. "
For Djokovic:
"Nadal is a great opponent that I know very well both on and off the court, I am sure that if he was able to attend the U.S. Open he would come. So I
wish him a speedy recovery. I think the tournament with feel his absence, as he is part of the sport's history. We all know how popular he is.’
Andy Murray said he was disappointed to learn the news of the package:
"Obviously it's a shame because Rafael is above all a friend. I am very sorry for him and for tennis because I think it's a great advantage for the tournament to have all the best in the biggest players there. For him it is a difficult time, I hope that the problems he already had in the past with the knees may improve with rest, and once healed he comes back to play his best tennis. "
