Wimbledon runner-up and second seed Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland recovered from the loss of the opening set and saved a match point in the third and deciding set to beat Mona Barthel of Germany 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) in her second round match at the Rogers Cup on Thursday.

In other matches, former French Open champion and 10 seed Li Na defeated Canadian wild card Eugenie Bouchard 6-4, 6-4, while Carla Suarez Navarro of Spain upset Germany’s Sabine Lisicki, seeded 15th 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.

It was not the best of days for Serbian tennis as two of their stars ranked as high as number one in the world in their respective careers, crashed out of the tournament in straight sets.

While 11-seeded Ana Ivanovic failed to win a game during her 6-0, 6-0 annihilation at the hands of  Italy’s Roberta Vinci of Italy in just 44 minutes, Jelena Jankovic came up short against home favourite Aleksandra Wozniak 6-2, 6-3. The Canadian wild card will take on Christina McHale of USA in the third round.

Top-seeded Victoria Azarenka was tied at 3-3 in the first set against Tamira Paszek of Austria when play was called off because of rain.

Other fixtures which were suspended because of inclement weather included the clash between sixth-seeded Angelique Kerber of Germany and Ekaterina Makarova, with Kerber leading 6-1, 1-3, while Caroline Wozniacki, the number seven seed was up 7-5, 4-0 in her match against Kiki Bertens of the Netherlands.

All three matches will be played to their conclusion on Friday.
