Tennis - The Americans had a good day at the WTA Brussels Open as seventh seed Varvara Lepchenko advanced to the second round and Mallory Burdette and Melanie Oudin came through the qualifying draw. Even American Coco Vandeweghe, who lost in the final round, got into the main draw as a lucky loser.
But it was Brit Elena Baltacha who made a winning return to the WTA Tour with a win over Swiss Stefanie Voegele 7-6, 7-5.
Baltacha, a former top 50 player but currently ranked no. 234, after she decided to take a break from the sport last year, commented, "It was just pure heart and pure effort. I was a break down in the first set and managed to claw my way back and win it in a very, very tight tie-break. And I was 5-2 down in the second set but it was only one break - I just held tight and stepped up when I had my opportunity. I had a game plan for her, mainly just playing my game and attacking whenever I could, but I also think when you play someone ranked so much higher than you, you really have nothing to lose. You can go out there and just swing freely. I just tried to stay positive and kept on trying to attack."
Lepchenko defeated the Serbian Bojana Jovanovski 62 67(8) 64.

How to play from the baseline
The expression “to endure the rally” is about those indeterminate moments of a rally where none of the players is leading.
The ability to endure the rally is fundamental when you play a “long rally”, because it offers you the chance to measure your opponent’s strong points and vulnerabilities, besides letting you position as best as possible for your next offensive shot.
