These were the words of Toni Nadal today on Radio Marca:
"Rafa has done everything possible to be in a position to go to London. This is one of the worst moments for him. What hurts most is that he cannot be the flag-bearer; it is one of the biggest disappointments of his life. Rafa was aware of the fact that these would be the last Olympics, so you can imagine how he feels right now. "
"We tried to force the issue but cannot do anything. The left knee still hurts. We had to do what the doctors told us, and their advice was to stay with the preparation. This morning when we went on court to train, we soon realized that there was nothing we could do and that it was not worth risking the impeding the chance of another player to participate in the Olympics. We insisted that was the wish of his life to play in the Olympic Games. Losing this opportunity is more painful than any other tournament because while each year there are Slams, the Olympics are only once every four years. It’s something really sad. "
Toni Nadal also discussed the time needed for recovery:
"We have no date set for his return but I think that he will recover for the next Grand Slam." (U.S. Open commences on 27th August)
