Former world no. 1 Ana Ivanovic scored a straight sets win over a qualifier to reach the second round of the US Open in New York on Tuesday.
The Serb beat 17 year old Ukranian Elina Svitolina 6-3, 6-2.
It was Ivanovic's second hardcourt match after Wimbledon. In her only other match on hardcourts this summer, she was beaten 60 60 by Roberta Vinci.
Ivanovic said, "I'm actually very happy the way I played, considering it's the first match and especially because I only had one match on hard courts coming in, which wasn't very representative. It was tough going on court today because I didn't know much about the opponent. She had a few matches behind her from qualifying, but I focused on my game and I did really well today. In the first game I was like, 'Oh my God, at least I should win a game."
Ivanovic next meet Swede Sofia Arvidsson who beat Japan's Kimiko Date Krumm 64 62
