2009 US Open champion Juan Martin de Potro scored a straight sets win in the first round of the US Open Championships on Wednesday.
Potro was due to play fellow Argentine David Nalbandian but the former world no. 3 withdrew from the event due to injury, sending Florent Serra into the main draw as a lucky loser.
Potro won the firts round match 6-4, 7-6(4), 6-4 in 2 hours and 34 minutes.
Potro is now 49-13 for the year but is looking to reach his first semi final in a slam since his title run here three years ago.
13th seeded Frenchman Richard Gasquet also reached the second round by beating Spaniard Albert Montanes 4-6, 6-2, 6-3, 6-3.
