World no.1 Roger Federer has advanced to the third round of the US Open Championships in New York with a straight sets win on Thursday night.
Federer beat 32-year-old German Bjorn Phau 6-2, 6-3, 6-2.
The top seed hit 44 winners in the 90 minute win.
Phau defeated a 19-year-old Federer in 1999 but had lost to the Swiss the last three times they played
Federer now plays the no. 25 seed Fernando Verdasco, a 7-6(4), 5-7, 7-6(5), 6-4 winern over countryman Albert Ramos.
Federer has never lost to Verdasco in their career match ups yet
