Tennis - Americans Bethanie Mattek-Sands, Melanie Oudin, Madison Keys and Christina McHale were among the winners on Friday in first round qualifying action at the WTA Mutua Madrid Open.

Mattek-Sands, who reached the semis in Stuttgart on clay last week, beat the former world no. 10 Andrea Petkovic 6-3, 7-5 while Oudin scored a rare morale boosting win over Czech Karolina Pliskova in three sets.

Keys was one of four teens who won. The 18 year old American defeated former Wimbledon semi-finalist Mirjana Lucic-Baroni 6-0, 6-2. There was a big surprise as 16 year old Sara Sorribes, who won the under 18 Mutua Madrid Open, defeated fellow teen and world no. 60 Annika Beck. Spain's Garbine Muguruza and Kazakh Yulia Putintseva also won.
