American teenagers Sloane Stephens and Madison Keys were unable to win their first round matches at the Memphis International WTA event on Monday.
Fourth seed Marina Erakovic beat Stephens, 46 60 61."At first it was pretty tight and then I got going in the second and third set," commented Erakovic. "I think I just started to play more aggressive. I started stepping in and taking the ball a little bit early and with that I managed to get a few more winners and start moving her around more."
Wild card Madion Keys lost in straight sets to Russian Vera Dushevina while another American teenaged wild card Lauren Davis lost to Varvara Lepchenko 7-5, 6-3.
Top seed Nadia Petrova also lost her opening match, going down to qualifier Camila Giorgi 6-4, 6-2.
British teen Heather Watson was also unable to go past the first round.
