Fifth seed Marion Bartoli and 8th seed Lucie Safarova were among the first round winners at the WTA New Haven Open on Sunday.
Safarova eas leading 63 41 against American Varvara Lepchenko before the American had to retire due to a wrist injury.
Bartoli beat British wild card Laura Robson, 63 63. "I was feeling quite comfortable when I was up 63 40, but she played some really good points to come back," Bartoli told the media. "It wasn't a huge turning point though - I stayed focused and consistent and that's why I was able to get through that. It was a good win, straight sets and neither set going too deep."
American 18 year old Sloane Stephens was also a first round winner.
