Sara Errani was among the winners at the Italiacom Open on Tuesday.
Currently ranked a career best no. 9 and the top seed this week, the French Open runner up beat Edina Gallovits-Hall, 61 61 for her 25th win on clay this season.
"I love playing in Palermo," Errani commented. "The first match after switching from grass courts to clay is never easy. For me to be No.9 is really fantastic," Errani said. "Now until the end of the season I don't have a lot of points to defend, and I hope I can improve my ranking even more. After Palermo I will play Bastad, then practice on grass in preparation for the Olympic Games."
Maria Elena Camerin upset five time champion Anabel Medina Garrigues 61 63 victory while Roberta Vinci beat Karin Knapp 62 62.
No.3 seed Julia Goerges beat Akgul Amanmuradova, 64 76(8), while fifth seed Carla Suárez Navarro scored a 64 61 win over Sacha Jones.
