Australian Open men's, outdoor hard-courts (15-28 January 2018)

All the top 100 players are committed to play the first Grand Slam of the season. It will be Rafael Nadal to lead the field: here the Spaniard reached four finals, winning in 2009 and losing in 2012, 2014 and 2017.

The defending champion Roger Federer bids to win his 20th Major and his sixth at the Australian Open. In 2017 at Melbourne, in his first tournament in six months, Federer beat four top ten players, including Nadal in the final coming back from 3-1 down in the fifth set, to write an unbelievable page of sports' history.

It will be the returns' Slam: the sixth-time winner Novak Djokovic, the five-time finalist Andy Murray and the 2014 champion Stan Wawrinka, despite he is not 100% healthy at the moment, are set to play their first Grand Slam event since Wimbledon. Also the 2016 semifinalist Milos Raonic and 2015 quarter-finalist Nick Kyrgios may go far.

Kei Nishikori is unlikely to play as he is having a slow recovery process. Four players used the protected ranking: Yoshihito Nishioka (who hasn't been playing since March due to knee surgery), John Millman, Andreas Haider-Maurer and Ricardas Berankis. Nicolas Jarry is the last player to directly enter by ranking, Gerard Melzer is the first alternate. Thanasi Kokkinakis, Tim Smyczek and Soon Woo Kwon all took a wild card invitation.
