ATP SYDNEY and AUCKLAND: Marcos Baghdatis wins in Sydney, David Ferrer and Feliciano Lopez upset in Auckland

Tennis - Top-seed Dominic Thiem got a late win over Gastao Elias in Sydney, Jack Sock, John Isner and Steve Johnson reach quarter-finals in Auckland


The last two ATP tournaments in Sydney and Auckland before the Australian Open are moving towards their business end. Both tournaments have seen some dramatic moments and Wednesday’s action was no different. Here’s a quick recap:

ATP Sydney

Second Round

Eighth seed Marcel Granollers was upset by Dan Evans. He was the only seed who was upset in the day’s play. Fifth seed Philipp Kohlschreiber defeated Australian wild card Jordan Thompson and Andrey Kuznetsov reached the quarter-finals when Alex de Minaur retired before the start of the second set. At the time of his retirement, de Minaur had lost the first set to the Russian 2-6.

Fourth seed Pablo Carreno Busta defeated Mischa Zverev and fifth seed Viktor Troicki defeated Paolo Lorenzi. Gilles Muller, the sixth seed also advanced to the quarter-finals. World no. 8 Dominic Thiem also reached the quarter-finals defeating Portuguese qualifier Gastao Elias.

ATP Auckland

Second Round

David Ferrer, the defending champion and third seed, was upset in the second round by Robin Haase, who overcame a one-set deficit to play in the quarters. Ferrer’s countryman Feliciano Lopez also forfeited his place in the tournament having needed to withdraw from the tournament with a back injury. Lopez pulling out of the tournament gave Jeremy Chardy a place in the quarters.

Eighth seed Marcos Baghdatis defeated German qualifier Dustin Brown. In the match between two Americans, fourth seed Jack Sock defeated qualifier Ryan Harrison. Second seed John Isner defeated Malek Jaziri and seventh seed Steve Johnson defeated Yen-Hsun Lu.
