Nikolay Davydenko takes Munich- View: 1400 by Jonathan Morgan
It has been a tough road for Nikolay Davydenko the past year and a half. In early 2010 he was beating Nadal and Federer and seemed a prime candidate to win AO 2010. A tough loss to Fed there and a series of injuries later, Davydenko looked to be well on the downside of his career.
But Davydenko played well this week, beating Kuznetsov, battled past Reister, Cilic, Stepanek, and now Florian Mayer to take the title. In the final today, Davydenko came out strong in the first, serving well, taking the ball early, and initiating the action and angles.
Mayer did the best he could, but 5 break points saved by Davydenko led to a 6-3 first set win. In the second, Funky Flo Mayer pulled even. Both guys played a stellar set, serving well and playing aggressively. Davydenko had just one chance to break and failed while Mayer took his chance and took the set 6-3.
In the third, we were preparing for a long battle, but Dayvdenko took the bull by the horns and ran away with the net. Fine serving at big times, and Florian Mayer's nerves getting the better of him led to a 6-1 3rd set victory for Nikolay Davydenko.
Both players will move up in the ranks after this match. Mayer will move up to #29 in the world while Davydenko will shoot up to #28 in the world. .
