In the first match Mikhail Kukushkin came back from the dead several times to beat Sam Querrey 3-6 7-5 7-5 to give the Kazaks the lead.
Querrey blew several opportunities to win the match and led with a double break at 3-0 in the second set. In the third, the American had double match point on the Kukushkin serve at 5-3 and then had the opportunity to serve the match out in the following game.
However, as with his match against Soderling yesterday, Querrey was broken serving for the match. He was then broken again at 5-6 for a disappointing defeat. In the second match, Mardy Fish made no such mistake and breezed to a straight sets victory against Andrey Golubev to draw the match level.
The tie will be decided by tomorrow’s doubles and a win for the USA will put them on the verge of reaching the final for the second consecutive year.
