ATP Roland Garros - Isner to face Nadal in first round- View: 1642 by Stephen Kelly
Photo: Isner in Madrid earlier this month (Daylife) John Isner paid the price for his recent slide down the ATP rankings when he was handed the worst possible draw in Paris. The big-serving American will open his account against five time champion and tournament favourite Rafael Nadal in the top match of the first quarter. The pair have met twice before and although Nadal prevailed on both occasions, Isner can take heart from the fact they were tight matches.
Three other Americans have also been drawn in the first quarter with Mardy Fish, Sam Querrey and Michael Russell all in that section. Querrey has been handed the toughest task and will face powerful German Philipp Kohlschreiber in the first round while Fish takes on veteran Brazilan lefty Ricardo Mello and Russell opens against 18th seed Gilles Simon.
The second quarter of the draw also features two Americans with Houston champ Ryan Sweeting playing Andreas Haider-Maurer and USTA wildcard winner Tim Smyczek playing his first ever match at the tournament against Juan Ignacio Chela.
The entire bottom half of the draw features just one player from the USA with Robert Kendrick drawn to face Spanish 30th seed Guillermo-Garcia Lopez. Elsewhere Roger Federer, the 2009, champion has been handed a tough draw against Feliciano Lopez, the player who came so close to beating him in Madrid while Novak Djokovic will continue his quest for the perfect season against Thiemo De Bakker.
If the matches go according to seeding then Fed and Djokovic would face off in the semi-finals for the third straight slam..
