The Association of Independent Institutions announced on Monday that seniors Valeria Podda and Jordan Cox have been named the A.I.I.'s Women's and Men's Tennis Players of the Week for the week ending Feb. 12.
Podda, a senior from Leiderdorp, Netherlands, went 1-0 for the week in singles, including a two-set win against Tusculum (Tenn.). She also went 2-0 in doubles action with wins against No. 26 West Alabama and Tusculum. Podda is a combined 6-0 on the season, posting a 4-0 record in doubles play at the No. 2 spot.
"Valeria produced another great week of tennis for us," said GGC head coach Chase Hodges. "She’s very deserving of this honor and has dominated her opponents all season. Valeria is primed to have a great senior season for us."
Cox, a senior from Sarasota, Fla., went 2-0 in singles action with wins over No. 4 Lander’s Ozan Cildir and West Alabama’s Honorio Fernandez (6-1, 6-0). He also partnered with Kevin Konfederak for three victories in doubles action as they defeated Omar El-Moslemany and Marc Hofer of Lander, (8-4), Julius Kaverinen and Henrik Sinkko of West Alabama (8-4), and Tusculum’s Tomas Kmetko and Toby de Klerk (8-2). Cox is 11-0 on the season, going 5-0 in singles and 6-0 in doubles play.
Hodges continued, "Jordan has been exceptional so far this season. He has displayed outstanding senior leadership and produced a great week of tennis for us."
Both GGC squads will host the Grizzly Invitational this weekend against some of the NAIA’s top programs.
