Florida Gulf Coast University freshman Maja Ornberg has been named the Atlantic Sun Women's Tennis Player of the Week. The Player of the Week award marks the first of the season and career for Ornberg and the third of the season for the Green and Blue.
Ornberg went a combined 4-0 in wins against Florida A&M and FAU. Ornberg's win is the third for the Eagles already this season. The Swede helped FGCU to its best start in Division I program history with the victories against Florida A&M and FAU to start 4-1.
Ornberg won her singles match 6-2, 6-0 against Florida A&M, then had a come-from-behind, three-set victory against FAU, dropping the first set, 5-7, and winning the next two 6-1. In doubles, Ornberg and Breana Stampfli went 2-0. Ornberg has played No. 1 singles in all five dual matches and is 3-1.
The freshman is off to an impressive start to her FGCU career as she has occupied the #1 singles position in all five dual matches and is 3-1 to this point in the season. Additionally, she has paired with Stampfli in #2 doubles in all five dual matches and is 3-2 on the year.
