2017 could be the last golden year of this tennis era. At least in terms of rivalries. This season was marked mostly by two challenges: among the men the fight between Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic and among women that between Serena Williams and Angelique Kerber. Both Djokovic and Williams were dethroned by their rivals, but the season was marked by a little bit of boredom.
This was so because Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Maria Sharapova had a poor season characterized by injuries and suspension.
So, the coming year, the return of these three great protagonists who have missed this season could upset the two great rivalries of this season, bringing back epic challenges that the court had started to lack in terms of history and enthusiasm of the fans and media.
What would happen if the three players were to return in excellent physical and mental condition in 2017? Surely, they could upset hierarchies and balances that have built up in terms of leadership during this season.
And yet, one last golden year is desirable. Think about what could happen if Federer, Nadal, Djokovic, Murray, Wawrinka, Nishikori, Tsonga and co. should all play at their best level. It would be a unique show. The same goes for the women's circuit, where, in addition to Kerber and Serena with the return of Sharapova, everyone will have the exploits of Simona Halep and Agnieszka Radwanska to see.
We hope that all the great champions will leave behind their physical problems and and will gift to all tennis fans, what could be defined as the greatest season of this tennis era, where rivalries will make 2017 unforgettable.
