Federer and Sharapova’s 2017: a year of favorable circumstances?- View: 19831 by Lorenzo Ciotti
The considerations that we are going to do are only hypotheses of favorable situations and circumstances that could help Roger Federer and Maria Sharapova reach important goals in the coming season.
2017 will be an interesting year to observe, both in the ATP and in the WTA Tours, especially because almost all the great stars of tennis will be coming back, although not all will start at the same time (del Potro will skip the Australian Open and Sharapova will come back in April).
First of all, what happened during the last six months of tennis could radically change from January, but assuming that the performances of the players will be more or less constant, or at least similar to what we saw from June 2016 to November 2016, then maybe, Roger and Masha would have more of a chance.
But, the state of form of Federer and Sharapova will also have to be considered. In past years the main problem for Sharapova was Serena Williams, while in 2014 and in 2015, the obstacle that didn’t allow Federer to win the much dreamed about eighteenth Slam responded to the name of Novak Djokovic.
Knowing that from July onwards, the performances of Nole and Serena were down, we can expect that this is already a favorable situation for Roger and Maria to be in. It is true that the Serbian and American can raise their level again , but the conditions will be evaluated from January onwards.
Second fact. The Next Generation, both for men and women, is not making great progress, except for a few like Dominic Thiem, Alexander Zverev, Lucas Pouille and Madison Keys. Third, the current leaders of the rankings. Andy Murray has historically suffered at the hands of Federer, but his current state of form is almost perfect.
However in the grass season the Swiss will have his best chances to win Wimbledon. Kerber now seems to be in the best moment of her career, but 2017 will provide a good assessment of her constancy. Then there are other players like Marin Cilic, Kei Nishikori, Milos Raonic, Garbine Muguruza, Simona Halep and Agnieszka Radwanska, all of whom have defeated the two players in the past.
It is but their lack of constancy that makes us say that Federer and Sharapova may have a better chance. Then there are Rafael Nadal and Stan Wawrinka. The Spaniard appears to be in the declining phase of his career, but it would be a mistake to underestimate his mental strength and his will to win.
Stan constantly has ups and downs, but in his ups, he is almost unbeatable. But even Stan doesn't have constancy. In any case, we believe that 2017 will be a great season for Federer and Sharapova, because it could be their last big chance to achieve more goals, like winning a Slam or two.
