Tennis – Who are the next young stars to watch out in 2017?
Women's tennis gives a few surprises every year and although a real generational change has not happened yet, significant changes, as the one at the top of the WTA ranking between Serena Williams and Angelique Kerber, occurred.
There are some young players in women's tennis who have done great things over the last two seasons and potentially in 2017 may have good chances of improvement. While others, like the young American Madison Key, must confirm the good things seen up to now. Here, we find out who are the five young WTA players to watch in 2017.
Oceane Dodin. The twenty-year old Frenchman won her first WTA title in Quebec City, Canada, against Lauren Davis in 2016. She adapts well to hard and synthetic surfaces, but many also expect great progress on clay and grass. 2017 will see her as one of the young protagonists.
Catherine Bellis. At seventeen years old, she has already reached the third round of the last US Open, in New York, last September. Of course she is one of the great hopes of American women’s tennis, and in her young career she has already faced champions like Angelique Kerbe, Serena Williams and Dominika Cibulkova.
Naomi Osaka. 2016 saw the 19-year-old Japanese tennis player reach the third round in three Grand Slams: Australian Open, Roland Garros and US Open. She has also reached the final at the home tournament in Tokyo, but in 2017, the young player seems ready for big goals.
Belinda Bencic. 2015 was sparkling for the young Swiss tennis player, but 2016, between injuries and poor performances, was forgettable. However, at nineteen, Belinda is still considered to be the future star of women's tennis, but in 2017 she will have to prove her value and keep the expectations.
Madison Keys. She is twenty-two years, but she plays almost like a veteran. 2016 was a good year for her, in which she won her second tournament on grass in Bimingham against Barbora Strycova, entered in the top-10 and reached the WTA Finals in Singapore. Actually she is the most in form tennis player among those of her generation, and the nearest to achieve great things.
