Could Lucas Pouille be the true heir of Roger Federer? (SURVEY INSIDE!)
Tennis - The young Frenchman reminds of the Swiss in some of his shot-making
22-year-old Lucas Pouille could be the surprise of the new tennis season in 2017. The Frenchman is undoubtedly the most promising star for his country that has seen Gael Monfils, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Richard Gasquet and Gilles Simon go without winning a Major, since Yannick Noah won it for the country.
Last season, however, Lucas proved to be ready at the highest levels of tennis and this means a breath of fresh air for French tennis. Not only this he is also considered to be the future of men's tennis along with Dominic Thiem, Nick Kyrgios and Alexander Zverev.
Pouile won his first ATP title in Metz against Thiem in 2016. It was one of the two finals he reached last year, the second that he lost to Fernando Verdasco in Bucharest. But above all, he reached the quarter-finals at Wimbledon and the US Open, which also included a magnificent win against Rafael Nadal, producing varied and interesting level of play.
The Frenchman in the last year has matured in knowing in his own ability. Considering the various players before him, he reminds of Roger Federer for characteristics and skills. However we have to be mindful of the following: Roger is a unique tennis player, inimitable and probably there will never be born a phenomenon like him.
In the past, there have been made many comparisons with Federer, pointing to his presumed heir, the tennis player who would enhance the crowd as did the Swiss. The most famous example is of course Grigor Dimitrov. The Bulgarian, nicknamed Baby Fed, hasn't however made the quantum leap that everyone expected and for most parts has had his career beached. He himself said that comparison with Federer was a weight he had to bear.
However, all the improvements that he has made in his game could make him the big surprise that all hope and expect and the player who can enhance the crow. As only Roger Federer can.
