WTA ROME - Svitolina upsets Pliskova,Halep and Bertens reach semifinals too- View: 2633 by Gatto Luigi
After five matches lost on five played where she had won only two sets, Elina Svitolina beat Karolina Pliskova for the first time in her career. The Ukranian player won 6-2 7-6(9) in an hour and 35 minutes, even if the Czech player has really many regrets as she was up a break in the second set and didn't convert three set points in the tie-break, which was thrilling and very quality.
In the semifinals Svitolina, who broke into the top 10 earlier this year, will face the American Venus Williams or Garbine Muguruza. Simona Halep won her ninth match in a row beating Anett Kontaveit 6-2 6-4 confirming to be the hottest player of the moment.
The Romanian player reaches her third semifinal at the Foro Italico, and tomorrow she will try to reach her first final against Kiki Bertens, who beat Daria Gavrilova 6-3 6-3 in an hour and a half. The World No. 20's bigger experience made a difference at the end.
Bertens's result is not a surprise as she reached Roland Garros semifinal last year, while Gavrilova had still a great week winning five matches in a row as she started from the qualifying draw.
