ATP Estoril - Verdasco ousts injured Raonic to reach the final- View: 2819 by Stephen Kelly
Photo: Raonic leaves the court after his semi-final defeat (Daylife) Fernando Verdasco is through the the Estoril final after injury forced opponent Milos Raonic to retire at the the end of the first set. In the fourth game of the match Raonic hit a spectacular overhead and appeared to aggravate something in his back.
He called for the trainer and briefly had treatment on the problem at the change over after the fifth game but didn't take a medical time out. He didn't look to be in too much discomfort and held his next two service games comfortably but when he lost his serve in the tenth game to hand Verdasco the set he called it quits.
Earlier today Raonic ousted Gilles Simon in a match that was held over from yesterday due to rain delays and eventually darkness. In the final Verdasco will face Juan Martin del Potro who overcame Pablo Cuevas in straight sets.
He didn't have it all his own way though and faced a set point at 5-6 in the second set tiebreak before eventually prevailing 6-2 7-6(6). Meanwhile in Munich, Nikolay Davydenko reached his second final of the year when Radek Stepanek retired when trailing at set and 4-0.
It is the Russian's first final since Doha in his first tournament of the year where he lost to Roger Federer. In the final he will face Germany's Florian Mayer who ousted compatriot Phillip Petzschner 6-3 6-4.
Davydenko boasts an impressive 20-6 record in career finals while Mayer will be seeking his first title. .
