Tennis - American loses in three sets at Wimbledon

Tennis - American Melanie Oudin, who reached the fourth round at Wimbledon four years ago as a 17 year old, has been beaten in the first round of this year's Championships by Portugal's Michelle Larcher de Brito, who is best known for her loud grunting.

Larcher de Brito, a former top 100 player herself but struggling in the past few years, needed three long sets to oust Oudin, 7-6 (7), 1-6, 6-4 and will meet second seeded Maria Sharapova in a grunt-fest.

It was the Purtguese player's first win in a grand slam main draw since the 2009 US Open.

Speaking after the win, De Brito commented, "I’m sure if you have two or three years of not doing anything, those thoughts run through your head.  But my family pushed for me. My dad never stopped believing in me. When I stopped believing, he did. So he really helped me through a rough patch."

Oudin commented after her loss, "It was almost the same kind of thing, which stinks. Sometimes I get nervous in the Grand Slams. I’ve been doing better at that. For a while I haven’t been starting off slow."
