Tennis: World no.1 Williams defeated Simona Halep and Jelena Jankovic defeated Roberta Vinci of Italy

Tennis: World no.1 and 16-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams and former world no.1 Jelena Jankovic reached the semifinal of the Western and Southern Open Tennis Championship in Cincinnati. This is first time since 2006 that Serena has reached the semifinal of Cincinnati.

The world no.1 is in supreme form this year and has lost only 3 matches in the whole season. She has won 8 titles this year and would be looking to add more here and in US Open.

She had beaten her Romanian opponent Simona Halep in both of their previous meetins, including one this year in Rome, where Serena won in straight sets.

Serena seemed to have come with same intentions as she outclassed Halep in the first set and bagelled her to take the first set 6-0.

The Romanian tried hard in the second set and was able to break Serena on one occasion but Serena broke her twice to take the set 6-4 and move into semifinal, where she will face world no.5 Li Na of China, who got a walkover against world no.4 Agnieszka Radwanska.

Serbia's Jelena Jankovic also reached the semifinal after beating Italy's Roberta Vinci in straight sets. Jankovic defeated Vinci 6-0, 6-4 by exactly the same scoreline, with which Serena had beaten Halep.

12th seed Vinci was coming after beating her compatriot and 6th seed Sara Errani in previous round but she was stopped by former world no.1 and 14th seed.
