Tennis: Reigning world number one Novak Djokovic has said that Spanish star Rafael Nadal is favorite to reclaim the world number one ranking and end the season at the top spot.
Djokovic ended last two seasons as the highest ranked player but Nadal has made a splendid comeback from knee injury in this season. The Spaniard, who went down to fifth ranking during the seventh month injury break, is already back to number two ranking and is leading the Race to London.
When Djokovic was asked about his chances of ending the season as world number for third year in a row, the Serbian said, "It's really tough to say. Nowadays, players at the top play for the whole year, which is what makes it challenging to finish on top. Rafa coming back and playing so well, that's what makes him favourite.”
He added, "But I still have [the number one ranking] and hopefully I can keep it, because Andy [Murray] has been playing well, and so have other players like Tomas Berdych. This is what you work for."
Nadal has already qualified for the semi-finals of the US Open after thrashing his countryman and Roger Federer’s conqueror Tommy Robredo in straight sets. Djokovic will take on Mikhail Youzhny of Russia for a place in the last four of the last Grand Slam of the season.
