Feliciano Lopez defeated Juan Monaco the 8 seed 6-4, 7-5. It was a good clay match, a nice display of contrasting styles. Monaco's level from a few years ago is just gone, not sure if it is physical or mental.

Ricardo Mello the Brazilian overcame the very tall American John Isner 6-4, 7-6(4). Isner put in a solid showing on this clay court, but Mello out maneuvered him for many stretches of the match.

Isner's serve kept him in it. Ilya Marchenko put wildcard playboy and 6 seed Ernests Gulbis out of his misery 6-2 6-4 in the 1st round. Another pathetic showing from Gulbis, who just doesn't seem to want to take this sport seriously.

Qualifier Adrian Ungur won over Ruben Ramirez-Hidalgo in a tough up and down match but will be nothing but fodder for Novak Djokovic in the 2nd round. Somdev Devvarman outlasted and outgrinded Mikhail Kukushkin 1-6, 6-4, 6-2 and will play Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in the 2nd round.

Fernando Gonzalez got himself a wildcard and won his first round match against Martin Klizan pretty easily. It is good to see Gonzo back and he plays Lopez next round. Michael Berrer edged past Alexander Peya the veteran 4-6, 6-3 6-4, and Marcel Granollers easily got through Franco Skugor.
