Juan Martin Del Potro destroys Fernando Verdasco to win Estoril- View: 1583 by Jonathan Morgan
Juan Martin del Potro, after missing most of 2010 with a wrist injury, has played well in 2011 in his comeback, and now he adds some more silverware to his trophy cabinet. After losing a set in the first round to Pedro Sousa, ranked around 500 in the world, not many had hope that Del Potro would get his clay feet this week in Estoril.
Not only has he done that, he beat Falla, Soderling, Cuevas, and now Fernando Verdasco, all without dropping a set. In the final, Del Potro was relentless against Verdasco. Consistent, heavy hitting was the order of the day with Del Potro dictating play and Verdasco defending and doing anything he can to get into the points.
The first set, Verdasco broke once, but otherwise was a beatdown. The second set, Del Potro was visibly nervous when the opportunity to close it out came up. Verdasco save 2 match points before Delpo finally finished out a 6-2 6-2 victory in 1 hour 15.
Del Potro, who started this year ranked in the 400's, is now ranked around 30th in the world. See you in Madrid, fellas. .
