The World number one broke the Cypriot’s serve in the first game of the match and never looked back as he extended his winning streak on clay to 35 matches. Del Potro had an even easier time of it in booking his third round place as he dispatched Croatia’s Marin Cilic for the loss of just three games at La Caja Magica.

The Argentine broke his opponent on five occasions and never faced a single break point as he wrapped up a 6-3 6-0 victory in just over an hour. Meanwhile, Novak Djokovic continued his perfect start to the season after getting past former University of Illinois star Kevin Anderson in a high quality match.

One break in each set for enough for the Serb as he extended his winning streak to 29 matches. "It was my first match in Madrid after two years and conditions are really fast here and it's hard to control the ball,” said the World number two.

"If you're playing a big server like Anderson it's a big effort to make a break and I had a lot of work to break him, but I did twice, once in each set, which was enough." Two of the other leading seeds in the draw both made it through with Robin Soderling seeing off Santiago Girlado 6-6, 6-3 and Tomas Berdych trouncing Marcel Granollers 6-4, 6-0.
