The Spaniard looked out of sorts from the beginning and struggled to deal with his opponent’s constant net forrays in a first set he lost in a tiebreak.

There was more of the same for the second set and the Italian looked on the verge of a 5-4 lead when he led 30-0 in the ninth game. However after sneaking to the net behind a wide serve he missed the easiest of volleys to let the world number one back into the game.

That proved to be the turning point of the match with Nadal taking the next 10 games to seal a 6/7 (6), 6-4, 6-0 win in front of a packed crowd on Court Centrale. Earlier, Madrid champion had no such problems as he breezed past Polish qualifier Lukas Kubot for the loss of just games to take his winning streak to 35 matches.

Roger Federer had a similarly easy time of things as he dispatched Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6-4, 6-2. One break was enough for the Swiss in the first set and in the second he looked on the verge of handing out a bagel when he had a brek point at 4-0.

However Tsonga held and managed to put some respectability on the scoreline but never looked like getting back in the match. Spanish sixth seed David Ferrer was forced to withdraw from his match against Marin Cilic with a fever.

He was replaced by lucky loser Carlos Berlocq, who lost to the big Croat in straight sets. Results (second round):
