However his serve went walkabout in the second and he was broken three times in a topsy turvy set he eventually lost 7-5. Normal service was resumed in the third, with Fish back in the groove on serve as he wrapped up a 7-6 (2), 5-7, 6-2 victory in just under three hours.

Despite the long match, Fish still had enough energy to play his first round singles match buddy Andy Roddick later in the evening. The American duo took on Czech pair Tomas Berdych and Lukas Dlouhy, eventually prevailing 19-17 in a marathon match tiebreak.

Another all-American pair were in second round doubles action with Sam Querrey and John Isner taking on legendary Indian pair Mahesh Bhupathi and Leander Paes.

Quisner took the first set 6-3 but lost the second by the same scoreline. However they quickly regrouped and upset their illustrious opponents 10-5 in the match tiebreak. Earlier in the afternoon, Querrey was on the court in singles but suffered a narrow 6-3 7-6(4) defeat to Spanish ninth seed Nicolas Almagro..
