King Djokovic beats Nadal again- View: 2016 by Jonathan Morgan
After Novak Djokovic played until late in the night last night against Andy Murray, many thought Djokovic would be too tired for Rafael Nadal. But, luck was on Djokovic's side as rain pushed the final back several hours from its scheduled start time.
But make no mistake, Djokovic was simply unplayable today. The first set was mostly Nadal playing very passively and Djokovic attacking relentlessly. Nadal seemed tactically clueless on how to attack Djokovic and simply retrieved and waited for the error.
Djokovic went for his shots, and converted on many. The second was very intense as Djokovic began to look a bit fatigued, but was not to be outdone by Nadal. Rafa was doing all he could just to hold serve and save break points.
Djokovic served well and was crushing backhands crosscourt, really pushing Nadal far behind the baseline. At 4-5 in the second, Nadal faced 3 match points, saved all 3, but could not save a 4th as Djokovic converted to seal a 6-4 6-4 victory, his 4th straight over Nadal in a Masters 1000 final this year, his 39th in a row, and a HUGE mental edge over Rafa going into the French Open.
Now the question is whether Djokovic can continue his incredible run at Roland Garros. Can he dethrone Nadal in Paris over 5 sets? Will either player be physically and mentally drained and lose early as they both did in 2009? As for the #1 ranking, well, Nadal is #1 only on the computer.
Barring an early round loss by Djokovic at the French, Nole will most likely take over #1 after the French. I'll tell ya one thing, this sure does make Roland Garros much more interesting. .
