Photo: Harrison hits a backhand during his Roland Garros qualifier against Ward (Daylife) Ryan Harrison is through to the second round of French Open qualification after a battling three set win against Britain’s James Ward.
Harrison, seeded 18, lost the first set in a tiebreak and was just two games from defeat in the second set before pulling it out 7-5. It was one-way traffic after that and with the Louisiana teenager taking it 6-2 to book a second round place against Spanish lefty Daniel Munoz-De La Nava.
Alex Bogomolov Jr is also through and continued his good form on the European clay to see off Ricardo Hoecevar of Brazil 9-7 in the third. Bogey trailed all the way through the deciding set and served to stay in the match three times before breaking at 7-7 and serving it out at the first attempt.
He will meet veteran South African Rik De Voest in the second round. They were the only wins for the American players on Day 1 of the tournament with Bobby Reynolds, Amer Delic, Jesse Witten and Alex Kuznetsov all falling at the first hurdle.
It was a mixed day for the Canadians in action. Frank Dancevic is safely through after an easy victory against Lukas Lacko but compatriot Peter Polansky fell in three to 11th seed Lukasz Kubot..
