Enzo Sommer and Maya Jansen are Pac-12 Players of the Week- View: 622 by Roxana Jo
The Pac-12 Conference officials announced that Washington's sophomore Enzo Sommer and California's graduate student Maya Jansen are the Players of the Week, which is the first honor of this kind for both of them. Somer, Switzerland native, is the first player who won this honor in 2017 that not comes from UCLA, helping Washington to carve a 6-1 triumph over Denver.
Against Michail Pervolarakis he had to come from behind, losing the opening set before he regrouped his game to score a 4-6 6-3 6-2 victory for his second win over ranked players this year (his doubles match was abandoned at 5-5).
Enzo is the first Huskie to grab this award since January 18 last year when Mitch Stewart claimed it, and the 13th overall. Billy Griffith (California) Riley Smith (USC) and Dan Little (Utah) were also nominated.
Maya Jansen deserved her award after a strong performance at ITA National Women's Team Indoor Championship where California defeated Georgia Tech and lost to North Carolina and Oklahoma State.
She contributed to her team's 4-0 win over Georgia Tech with a 6-2 6-1 triumph over Nami Otsuka while her doubles match was abandoned. Jansen again proved her form versus mighty North Carolina, beating Rachael James-Baker 6-0 7-5, but Hayley Carter/Sara Daavettila were too strong for her and Maegan Manasse indoubles, letting them only one game.
Court number 5 was fortunate for Maya against Oklahoma State as well, ousting Sofia Blanco 6-2 6-2, and before that, she and Manasse took down Vladica Babic/Carla Tur Mari 6-3 on the main doubles court. This was the 37th Player of the Week honor for the Golden Bears, the first this season.
