The main WTA event in Luxembourg played at the Kockelscheuer Sport Centre, has started in 1991 as an exhibition event, and in 1996 it became a part of the official WTA calendar, with Anke Huber as the first winner. Between 1999-2005, Kim Clijsters was the dominant figure in Luxembourg, winning 5 titles in 7 years, and she is the only multiple winner.
That could change in 2016, with the last 3 champions entering the main draw, that being Caroline Wozniacki, Annika Beck, and Misaki Doi. Petra Kvitova will be the top seed ahead of Wozniacki, Kiki Bertens, and Caroline Garcia, but some unseeded players will also wait for their chance for a good result here, as this will the final event of the season for many of them.
